career tips, jobs, cv design, cv templates,

There are many things that you can do to improve your career, most common advice is; have clear goals, read and learn more, review yourself, constantly take action and avoid procrastination, take risks and be willing to fail.

All of these are great advice and they resonate with my philosophy of life, however, there are other simpler things you can do to improve your career and overall success in your professional life.

Link with others / Get a Mentor

LinkedIn is one of the most popular professional social platforms available, and this year be wise enough to use this tool effectively. Many professionals have listed themselves on the platform and you can freely approach them and connect however, do not only press the invite button but rather send a personalised message that will inform the prospective connection of your intention to connect with them.

e.g.

Hi Mr. Van Wyk,

I am a great admirer of your work and have been following your career for some time now, my name is Jessica Scheepers, I am a project manager at XYZ Company, I would like to connect with you because I need some advice on the subject of project financing, an area I believe you master.

Should you have time to provide feedback, I will greatly appreciate your time and expertise.

Yours sincerely,

Jessica

This simple act alone can open many doors of opportunity. I will soon write an article dedicated to how to use LinkedIn effectively.

YouTube the right videos, the internet is a great tool to have and with all great things comes great responsibility. Instead of using the internet for meaningless gossip and time-wasting articles, rather use the time on things that can help you to grow in areas you lack skills in.

YouTube has over 7 billion videos and 300 hours of content gets uploaded daily, this is way more than DSTV, and with that being said it is clear that we must be careful with what we consume. The platform has some amazing content like, full university lectures from the best universities in the world, documentaries about the earth and the galaxies, and other entertaining channels, but most importantly YouTube has many videos about tips to help you improve in most areas of life, and instead of using the platform mainly for music and non-discriminatory entertainment, it is advisable for this year to deliberately search for channels that will uplift you and make you a better person.

Take care of your Digital and Physical image

We have 2 images, one on paper/digital and the physical image. It is very important that we take great care of both. Many neglect their digital image and concentrate on the physical without understanding that these days in most cases, we meet people digitally first then meet them in real life. E.g. before going to a meeting with a person you don’t know it is easier to always check the person online to see who they are and what to expect in the physical.

This year we recommend that you take great care of your image digitally as you do physically, and to start this journey, you can look at getting your LinkedIn Profile professionally edited and optimised.

When applying for a Job remember that the first image your potential employer meets is your digital image, which is your CV/ resume. If it is not unique and interesting it will not stand out from the rest and you might miss out on a lot of opportunities so, we recommend that this year have your CV/ resume / profile professionally done so that you stand out from the rest in an opportunity.

Make this year the one to constantly improve and you will later reap the rewards.
