The pursuit of happiness in the workplace will differ from person to person. Depending on the kind of work you do at some point, your job can feel like an extreme sport and quite exhausting. This could simply mean that you need to find the things that make your day more pleasant and consequently increase your happiness.

Essentially, you need to take a moment and just reflect. If you are happy at work, awesome, find out why and keep doing that. If you are unhappy, identify the source of your unhappiness, and determine ways to change it.

You have to be intentional when pursuing your happiness and actually determine what being happier in the workplace means for you. This is important because it means increased productivity for the company which is great for your career progression and benefits your overall personal wellbeing. There are various factors to consider when deciding what makes work and your career worthwhile for you.

Practice Mindfulness: Being mindful and aware of what is happening around you in the workplace can help you prepare for certain situations, make you feel calmer, less reactive, and attain pursuit of happiness in the workplace. At this point you are in control because being mindful will help your ability to regulate your emotions, and ultimately decrease stress, anxiety, as well as depression.

Pursue New Challenges: In cases where work starts feeling monotonous, and maybe even boring, it might be time to find professional challenges that support your happiness. Find ways to take part in discussions that are important to you and think about taking on additional tasks that will contribute to your growth, experience, and most importantly happiness. Career satisfaction is important so make being at work, work for you.

Celebrate Success:  When in pursuit of happiness in the workplace no accomplishment is too small. Celebrate all of them. Use your achievements as points of affirmations to support your happiness during stressful moments. Have an achievement-oriented attitude, look forward to celebrating your wins and stop perceiving work as just a means to an end, a survival mechanism, but rather an opportunity to grow and be better.

Work-Life Balance: In the pursuit of happiness in the workplace, I believe it goes without saying that you must maintain a work-life-balance as much as possible. To maintain a greater sense of fulfilment and calm, it is vital that you balance your personal values with the demands of your job. Having a work-life balance will improve your overall health and well-being, you will be more productive, enjoy and have fun at work, and hopefully you will have more personal time.

Take a break: Sometimes all you need to do is just rest. Taking a break can help you reset and have a positive outlook on work. Disconnect from work completely, it will help you recuperate from workplace stress, come back more energised and happier to achieve both business and personal career goals.

For you to be happy, you need to feel a sense of belonging, your work environment needs to be conducive to your happiness. Little things like knowing that your team has your back goes a long way. Work places differ and it is hard to change long standing corporate culture, however,  there has to be some sense of flexibility and you need to work for a company that supports your personal development and growth.

Regardless of everything else, some jobs are just too toxic, and if that is the case with your current job, fine tune your career brand by dusting off your CV and updating your LinkedIn profile, and as soon as you’ve secured your next opportunity, leave the job with your head held high.
