Feeling stuck? Push yourself to move!

Are you at a point where you feel like there is no longer progression and you anticipate being stuck in the same position for over 10 years without growth? What adds salt to the injury could be the fact that everyone around you seems to be elevating and easing into positions they have always wanted. You on the other hand are always asking yourself “What about me?”.

I mean you have always placed your best foot forward when it comes to performing your duties. You have probably sealed a few deals, optimised a few operations, and contributed towards building people skills too. But with all that, you still feel like all your hard work is not being recognised. Stop for a second and think about it.

You might have grown so much in the past few years that there is no longer room for growth, hence you are feeling stuck. Remember, building your career is your responsibility, and only you can push yourself to move forward.

It is most certainly going to be a challenge. I mean, what I am saying is that you are going to have to move outside of your comfort zone. One of the main reasons why you’re feeling stuck could be because you got too comfortable. Big mistake! But it can be fixed.

Push yourself to move by:

Finding what motivates you

When you are motivated by something or someone, whenever you think about giving up or being too comfortable, that thing comes to mind. If the aim is, for example, to build a future for your children where even if they decide not to work a day in their life, they will still get by, then you know for sure that being stuck in the same position without growth for years is not an option for you.

You must position yourself in a manner that allows you to keep building and growing your career. At some point, you probably want to retire, and the goal is definitely not to retire and be a burden on someone else, so secure the bag now while you still can.

Becoming an entrepreneur

There is nothing wrong with being an employee for the rest of your life. The problem starts when you have been an employee for too long and you no longer feel challenged. You are feeling stuck simply because it has all become routine. You have seen and done it all. There aren’t any challenges for you anymore. It is time to start building something of your own.

It is certainly not going to be easy, but you have to push yourself to move, to find that purpose, and essentially make more money for yourself. By being an entrepreneur, you will afford yourself the opportunity to surround yourself with people that share the same vision as yourself. Take the risk, and become your own boss, because your 9-5 is no longer serving its purpose.

Building your career brand

Sometimes the only reason you are not elevating is that your brand does not represent you as it should. You are still sending recruiters CVs that have a bold “Curriculum Vitae” on the first page and a whole lot of redundant information that does not help you in achieving your career goals.

Do you even have an online presence? How else are hiring managers going to get a sense of the type of person that you are if you are not represented well on the various digital platforms? And you wonder why you are feeling stuck. The game has changed!

There is always someone better than you, more qualified than you, with more experience. But with an optimised career brand, you show the recruiter why you are the best candidate for the job. Optimise that LinkedIn profile, build a career presentation, and go get what’s yours.

Networking with the right people

I cannot stress enough the importance of aligning yourself with the right people. They will not only make you aware of opportunities available to you, but they will help you get your foot in the door. If you are trying to start a business, they will guide you on how to go about it, and if the goal is to become a board member, they will show you the ropes. This is a simple way to progress quickly in your career.

LinkedIn is one of the best tools to network, use it! And do not just take from your networks, offer them opportunities too. Build the relationship, and make sure that it is mutually beneficial.

Working towards your goals

Most importantly, work towards achieving your goals. When you started building your career brand, you established a certain direction. Push towards it. Being happy in your chosen career path is vital, and nothing makes you happier than seeing your goals become a reality.

Apart from everything else, you need to remember that patience and diligence are important here. You are not going to achieve your career objectives overnight, and it certainly won’t happen if you do not put in the work. Invest both time and money, and make sure you achieve what you have envisioned.

In the words of Blaine Hogan: “You will not be stuck forever. The trick is to know there are no tricks. There is only the work.” So, push yourself and move towards success.
